Best suited for early childhood - Year 3
From $20 + gst / per person
Designed especially for our youngest learners, this experience introduces tamariki to the stories of Ihumaatao through puuraakau, exploration and play. Guided by ahi kaa, children will discover the magic of this special place as they listen, imagine, move and connect with the whenua.
Storytelling & Guided Hiikoi (1.5 hours total experience)
Our shorter hiikoi is paced for young learners and brings the stories of Ihumaatao to life through interactive storytelling, observation and discovery.
Together we explore the puuraakau of:
Hape and the arrival of Te Waka Tainui
Maki, the tuurehu who was a skilled fisherwoman
Mataoho, the tupua of the volcanoes whose presence shaped the landscape of Taamaki Makaurau
Along the way, we explore our natural environment and tamariki are encouraged to ask questions, engage their imaginations and build a meaningful connection with the whenua.
Keemu Maaori
Learning continues through traditional Maaori games that encourage movement, curiosity, teamwork and fun.
One of our favourite activities is Kimihia te Patupaiarehe (Find the Patupaiarehe), where tamariki search through our living food forest for the mysterious forest beings while uncovering the stories and treasures hidden within the landscape.
Readings & Puuraakau
Throughout the experience, we share beautifully told stories and age-appropriate readings that help bring the history, people and traditions of Ihumaatao to life in ways that are engaging and memorable for young minds.
Teacher Resources (Coming Soon)
Continue the learning back in your classroom or centre with story resources, downloadable classroom activities and curriculum-aligned learning materials inspired by the puuraakau and living landscape of Ihumaatao.
